iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 adds hidden power button to iPhone and iPad

Sometimes you need to turn your iPad or iPhone completely off. It seems like a simple task, but since the introduction of Face ID, it’s been difficult. You can’t just hold down a physical button; you need a special combination. Luckily, iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 add a hidden power button to your iPhone and iPad.

Normally you can turn off the device completely by holding the side button and one of the volume buttons simultaneously until the power off screen appears. Thanks to a new virtual button you can now easily turn off the device.

Power button in Control Panel

Starting with iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, you can use a completely new Control Center. You get complete freedom to customize the controls and organize the panel to your own preferences. Thanks to this change, Apple decided to introduce a handy on/off button. We explain where you can find it.

  • Open the control panel
  • A standby button will appear in the top right corner
  • Place your finger on the power button for a few moments
  • The turn off screen is displayed
  • Use the turn off slide switch to turn the appliance off

Did you know that you can also turn off your iPhone or iPad via the Settings app? Open Settings ▸ navigate to ‘General’ ▸ Tap on ‘Switch Off’ at the bottom. The switch off screen will immediately appear and you can use the slider to turn off your iPhone or iPad.

No Medical ID and Emergency Call

Unlike pressing the side button and a volume button at the same time, the hidden standby button will not also allow you to use your Medical ID or emergency call. Here you remain dependent on the button combination. Alternatively, you can quickly press the side button in succession to call the emergency services.
