Checking in at the NS with your iPhone: it can be done very quickly

Good news! You will soon be able to check in at the NS with your iPhone. You no longer need an OV chip card. There is still a major drawback.

Check in at the NS with your iPhone

When you want to take the train, you always have to take out your public transport chip card first. But from January 31, that is no longer necessary. It will then be possible to check in with the Dutch Railways anywhere with your iPhone (and Apple Pay). In fact, it works with your contactless debit card, credit card and mobile (iPhone and Android).

That’s so easy. You no longer need an extra pass. To check in, double-press the side button (or the home button if you have one) and hold the phone up to the post. Basically the same way you can pay with your iPhone in the supermarket. Of course it is also possible to use your Apple Watch.

Check in at NS with your iPhone or debit card

  1. Take your debit card from your wallet or double-click your iPhone’s side button (or home button if you have one) to launch Apple Pay;

  2. Hold the card or your iPhone against the card reader and wait for the sound signal;

  3. Also repeat the above steps when getting out.

NS and Apple Pay: this is how the payment works

To check in and out with your contactless debit card, credit card or mobile, you do not need to activate anything. From 31 January 2023 you can immediately travel in this way in the Netherlands.

All travel expenses that you incur on one day will be debited from your account in one go the next day. The debit always has a payment reference that starts with NLOV and then 14 numbers and letters. Your bank does not see how you travel. And the conductor who checks you does not see any bank details either.

Checking in with your iPhone does have one major drawback

It is of course very handy that you can check in with the NS with your iPhone. However, there is still a significant drawback. It is not (yet) possible to link your subscription to the debit card.

That is why you cannot yet use your NS season ticket when you have one. You therefore always pay the full price for the train journey when you take out the iPhone before checking in at the NS.

At the moment, the function is therefore especially useful if you occasionally travel by train and you do not have a subscription. You no longer have to buy an OV chip card and load it first. Of course you must have a valid debit card with which you can pay contactless and that must be linked to your iPhone.
