Create a guest account Windows 11: this is how you do it

Creating a guest account on a Windows 11 computer that is used by several people is not an unnecessary luxury. This is just not as easy as on Windows 10. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. You have to jump through a few more hoops. We have listed the steps for you.

Within Windows 11 you can create a local account that grants limited access to certain computer components. Users can use browsers, for example, but not just download or install new software. One way you can accomplish this is by using the Command Prompt. We explain how.

Open Start and type cmd in. The top result is Command Prompt; select that option with your right mouse button and choose Run as administrator† In the new window, choose Yes. Now copy the following line of text:

net user Visitor /add /active:yes

After copying, press Enter. Windows runs the command and creates a guest account. You recognize this by the text “The job is completed† If you want to provide this guest account with a password, enter this line:

net user Visitor *

Now press Enter. However, this is an optional step and not required. If you do go for it, the Command Prompt will ask if you want to enter a password. Enter it and confirm it and press Enter again.

If you want to view the guest account you just created, go to Settings † Accounts† Select the option on the left Family and other users† You will find the account under Other users† You will also see the account on the login screen. This is also where you delete the guest account called Visitor.

Add guest account Windows 11 via Settings

You can also add a guest account via the Settings. But in that case you create one without any restrictions. You go to Settings † Accounts † Family and other users† Press Add someone else to this PCunder the heading Aother users† At this point we need to select specific options.

When Microsoft asks how that person signs up, select the option at the bottom I do not have this person’s login details† In the next window, where you have to create an account, choose the option at the bottom Add user without a Microsoft account†

Then enter a username and possibly a password, so that the account is protected. Then you go through the remaining steps that appear on the screen.
