The Dutch have struggled with the sea since the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, they have been plagued by disastrous flood disasters. After the flood of 1953 triggered a political crisis, a whole series of modern systems are being built as part of the so-called delta project, including the huge storm surge barrier in Oosterschelde.
