Do you regularly see an orange dot at the top of your iPhone screen? This means that an app is secretly listening to you. This is how you turn it off!
Orange dot on iPhone
You regularly see certain symbols at the top of your iPhone screen. One of these is a small orange dot, which appears next to the notch or in the Dynamic Island of the iPhone. This orange dot does not appear without reason, because it indicates that an app is using your microphone in the background. An application often does this to collect information by listening in with you.
It can of course also happen that the orange dot appears on your iPhone when you are on a call, using Shazam or when you send a voice message via WhatsApp. That’s not a problem, because then you use the microphone consciously. Does the orange dot appear without using an app? This concerns an application that secretly listens to you in the background. We tell you how to prevent that.

Turn off microphone
The orange dot on the iPhone is automatically enabled as soon as the microphone is active. That is a feature that Apple introduced to ensure user privacy. This way you know exactly when the microphone is and is not listening. Do you see that the microphone is on at unwanted or strange times? Then it is advisable to check which apps have access to the microphone. You can see this as follows:
- Open ‘Settings’ on your iPhone or iPad;
- Go to ‘Privacy and security’;
- Scroll down and open ‘Microphone’;
- Turn the switch behind apps of your choice on or off.
In this list you can see exactly which applications do and do not have access to the microphone. Is the switch on behind a certain app? Then you have given the application permission to use your iPhone’s microphone. If you see an orange dot appear on your iPhone at random times, it is advisable to take a critical look at this list of apps. Take a good look at which apps do and do not need the microphone to function.

More iPhone tips
Do you never use the microphone with certain apps? Then disable the function to prevent applications from randomly activating the microphone. With the majority of apps you don’t need the microphone at all, so you don’t have to give them permission. The fewer applications have access to the microphone, the less likely the orange dot will appear unwanted on your iPhone.
Are you unsure whether an application needs your microphone to function? Then it is best to switch off the microphone. If an app still needs the microphone, a notification will automatically appear when you use the application. Especially with apps like Temu or TikTok, it is advisable not to give access to the microphone, so that your privacy is guaranteed. Did you find this a useful tip and would you like to know more?
