MacWelt planned to get to the bottom of it and tested iOS 17 with an iPhone SE 2020. With its A13 chip, the iPhone SE 2020 can install the update.
1. Speed ​​in Safari
To test the speed in Safari, the Jetstream Browser Test program and Basemark 3.0 were used. Jetstream tests the general performance of a browser and Basemark focuses on the graphical qualities.
As you can see, the results are almost the same. There is a very small difference in the numbers, but you won’t notice that in practice.
2. Processor and Neural Engine
The chip and the Neural Engine have been tested with the Geekbench and Geekbench ML programs. Here too, there are only very minor differences between both versions of the operating system. iOS 17 certainly does not make your iPhone noticeably slower here either.
3. Graphics performance
The 3D Mark Wild Life program is used to measure the graphics performance of iOS 17. Strikingly enough, there is a difference here. In iOS 17.0.3, the iPhone SE 2020 is about 13 percent slower.
The number of frames per second went from 38.18 (in iOS 16) to 33.1 (in iOS 17). MacWelt could not explain this difference. However, they discovered that the performance deteriorated as the battery became more empty. Hopefully this will be improved in future iOS 17 updates.
Conclusion
The latest version of the operating system had quite a rickety start. Several updates for iOS 17 have already been released. There is a performance dip in the graphics performance of the iPhone after the update, but you cannot say that the iPhone SE 2020 has really become much slower. You won’t notice this in daily use.
