European commercial vehicle sales experience November dip

It was not only the sale of passenger cars that was hit hard at European level in November, but commercial vehicles also suffered. In total, the number of new commercial vehicles registered in the European Union was 14.7 percent lower in November than one year previously. The decline was particularly noticeable in the delivery vans.

The month of November is one to forget for the car sector. Although the company cars did slightly better than the enormous drop of 20.5 percent for passenger cars, it is not much of a difference. Certainly not for delivery vans, where sales fell by no less than 16.6 percent. Since more than four out of five commercial vehicles fall into this category, this has a significant impact on the average. The number of registrations for heavy trucks over 16 tons fell by 3.5 percent, the medium-duty trucks recorded a minus of 6 percent. Only the buses were on the rise with a mild increase in registrations of 1.6 percent.

In the Netherlands, company car sales increased by 1.1 percent in November compared to 2020. The delivery vans showed a dip of 1.8 percent, but the number of new registrations for medium and heavy trucks increased by about a quarter. The number of new buses will be halved compared to 2020.

Over the first eleven months of this year, however, European commercial vehicle sales are still positive compared to 2020, where passenger cars are already down. In 2021, 11.5 percent more commercial vehicles have been sold in the European Union so far. In the Netherlands, sales are still 12.6 percent ahead of 2020.
