Order in the chaos
As if the name ‘4-Door’ for a five-door model isn’t confusing enough, Mercedes seems to have spared no effort in recent years to mislead us when it comes to the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door. That was successful, but we are picking ourselves up again with a new overview and the prices of the new facelifted versions.
First the real news: the updated Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door is currently available in three versions. The rear-wheel drive Mercedes-AMG GT 43 seems to have disappeared, so there is now a choice of the Mercedes-AMG GT 43 4Matic+ (six-cylinder, 367 hp), the Mercedes-AMG GT 54 4Matic+ (six-cylinder, 435 hp) and the Mercedes-AMG GT 63S E Performance (long name, eight-cylinder, plug-in hybrid, 843 hp). According to the same configurator, these three versions cost €151,895, €174,526 and €246,925 respectively, making them, like a whole wheat bread from the bakery around the corner, considerably more expensive than a few months ago.
However, we are not there yet. We would like to take this opportunity to once again create some order in the history of the AMG GT, which, due to a combination of all kinds of engine versions and multiple facelifts – which then applied to one version and then to the other – was certainly not is clear. Here we go.
Overview of models and facelifts Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door
The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door was presented in 2018 as the five-door brother – yes really – of the three-door AMG GT, which has now been succeeded by a completely new model based on the SL. It was there from the beginning as 43, 53, 63 and 63 S, but the latter was not yet the mighty plug-in we know today.
A small update followed in the summer of 2021, which hardly brought any external news and seemed to apply mainly to the six-cylinder versions. In September 2021 we learned why: the uber-thick Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door 63S E Performance appeared and received a front bumper that, like that of the facelift versions, was slightly different than before. The result is easy to guess: the regular 63 and 63 S, i.e. those without a plug, received the same front in March 2022.
This year it happened again. Just like two years ago, the six-cylinder engines were the first to receive a facelift, which this time brought more cosmetic updates than before. This facelift now also appears to apply to the V8 versions, which in our country means that it applies to the E Performance. The return of the regular 63 S was announced last year, but that version has now apparently been discontinued.
With the latest facelift, the most striking news is that a thick, dark ‘slot’ has been added under the grille, which optically extends the grille a little further downwards. The front bumper is a bit sleeker and has vertical cooling openings on the left and right. At least… that applies to the V8 versions. The 43 and 53 have the ‘old’ front as standard, but are available with the ‘slot bumper’ for an additional charge of €3,509 through what Mercedes calls the ‘V8 Exterior Styling Package’.
Previously it seemed that the new, sleeker front bumper was specifically for the six-cylinder engines. That is only the case with that option package. The Mercedes-AMG GT 63S E Performance 4-Door – we like to write it out because it sounds so good – has this front as standard. Do you still get it? Nice!
