Fernando Alonso will exchange Alpine’s Formula 1 team for Aston Martin next year. The 41-year-old driver succeeds Sebastian Vettel, who announced his departure from Formula 1 last week.
Fernando Alonso surprises friend and foe with perhaps the most unexpected team change in a long time. The two-time world champion will leave the Alpine team after this season and will continue with the Aston Martin Formula 1 team. The acclaimed Spanish driver previously seemed to want to join Alpine for a longer period. Now, however, he suddenly jumps into the gap left by Sebastian Vettel, who has stopped racing. Alonso’s contract with Alpine, the former Renault team, expired after this season. In recent weeks there have been rumors that a contract extension was coming. Moreover, on his return to Formula 1 in 2020, Alonso indicated that he wanted to work with Alpine to the top. So that’s not going to happen. The most experienced F1 driver of all time (Alonso drove a record 346 races) is switching to a team that is currently having a much harder time. Aston Martin is ninth in the championship, Alpine fourth.
