Festival DGTL leaks the data of 130,000 visitors

The private data of 130,000 visitors to DGTL has been leaked on the website of the popular techno festival. An anonymous hacker could easily get to the e-mail addresses, passwords, 06 numbers and other sensitive data of festival goers.

Festival DGTL hacked

Anyone who has been to the DGTL festival between 2015 and 2018 runs the risk that hackers will get hold of passwords and personal data. The database containing the information of anyone who purchased a ticket during that period was easily accessible to malicious parties for many years. RTL News.

It was an anonymous Dutch hacker who accidentally discovered that the full source code of the website was publicly available. He took a look and simply came across the login details that gave him access to the festival’s database of 130,000 visitors. He also had the option of adjusting the website and, for example, posting news items.

The hacker informed the organizer Apenkooi Events, but the organization and website builder then continued to point fingers at each other for months without the error being addressed. According to Apenkooi Events, the database has been removed, but copies could still be found on the DGTL website. The hacker then decided to inform RTL Nieuws. The Dutch Data Protection Authority says in a response to RTL Nieuws that it cannot confirm that the leak has been reported by the organization.

This is what you should do

If you bought tickets for the festival in the period between 2015 and 2018, you must immediately change your password to the DGTL website. If you have a bad habit of reusing passwords, you should change it on every platform where you use it.

And as for the leaked personal data: try to be extra vigilant for phishing attempts. Malicious persons can use the data to appear extra credible. If you still bought tickets for DGTL after 2018, you run no risk, because from then on the sale took place via an external party.
