First all-European EV battery produced

Last night, Sweden’s Northvolt assembled the first battery cell designed, developed and assembled entirely in Europe. With the start of the production process at Northvolt, the first European step has been taken to reduce dependence on Asian suppliers.

European car manufacturers still rely heavily on South Korean and Chinese companies for battery cells, such as Samsung SDI, LG Energy Solutions and CATL. In Europe, therefore, many manufacturers, whether or not in collaboration with other companies, are working on new factories for battery cells. The Northvolt Ett factory, where the first European battery cells are made, is such a production center. Northvolt proudly announces that the first all-European battery cell is now a fact.

It is an important step for many car manufacturers. Northvolt will supply battery cells for electric cars to various big names in the coming years. One of the largest investors in Northvolt and its factories is the Volkswagen Group. BMW, Volvo Cars and Polestar are also among the customers. Northvolt wants to eventually realize a battery production of 60 GWh per year at the factory in Skellefteå, Sweden.
