Attention car drivers! In the Netherlands, the first speed camera is placed, which registers or road users use their phone behind the wheel. Here is the new flash!
New Dutch flash
The Netherlands has had a focus flash there since this week. This is a new type of speed camera, which checks whether drivers of a car use a mobile phone while driving. Does the flash register a mobile device behind the wheel? Then the focus flash makes a photo, which is checked at the Central Judicial Collection Agency. Does it appear that a telephone behind the wheel has indeed been used? In that case a high fine follows.
To use a phone behind the wheel you will receive a fine of no less than in the Netherlands 430 euros sent home. That is not the entire amount, because nine euros in administration costs are added. It had been forbidden for much longer to use your iPhone (or other devices) behind the wheel, but it is the first time that this can be recorded by a speed camera.

Here is the speed camera
Minister David van Weel of Justice and Security installed the first Focus flash in the Netherlands on Monday 10 February 2025. The speed camera is located in The Hague, on the Professor BM Teldersweg. More focus flashes will follow soon, a total of fifty of these new speed cameras will be placed in the Netherlands. These do not remain in the same places, but will rotate throughout the country.
The new focus flashes in The Hague will be tested in the coming weeks. Only then will the first fines follow, which is expected to happen in April 2025. In addition to The Hague, cities in Utrecht and Noord-Holland also get focus flashes along the road in the short term. It is not yet known where the new speed camera is placed even more. In any case, it concerns locations throughout the Netherlands.

The new speed camera must ensure that road users in the Netherlands no longer use a phone behind the wheel. Earlier research has shown that 75 percent of motorists sometimes use a phone behind the wheel. That is a very high percentage that pays a risk to road safety. With the placement of the new focus flashes, it is expected that this percentage will decrease over a time.
With CarPlay it has been possible for some time to use your iPhone in a safe way behind the wheel. Newer cars are often equipped with a media system with support for CarPlay. That way you get access to the most important apps of your iPhone, without grabbing your phone. Would you like to use CarPlay wirelessly in your car?
