Fix your iPhone yourself? Apple helps with ‘Self Service repairs’

Remarkable news today. While Apple used to discourage it from repairing your iPhone itself, the tech giant is now going in a completely different direction. The company just announced the “Apple Self Service Repairs,” where you can buy iPhone parts to repair your phone yourself.

The Self Service repairs will be available in the United States beginning in early 2022. More countries will be added in the course of the year – it is not yet known which ones. In the beginning, the Apple Self Service repairs can fix iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, later more devices will follow, including Macs with M1 chips.

In DIY repairs, Apple sells genuine parts and tools. It also provides instructions on how to repair Apple products at home, so you don’t necessarily need to take it to a repair shop. First, Apple will help you replace the screen, battery, and camera, which are the most frequently replaced. Other types of repairs will follow later.

The initiative is surprising, as Apple has always strongly opposed the Right to Repair Act and has been very careful about who fixes iPhones, Macs and other Apple devices. With ‘Apple Self Service’, the telephone farmer around the corner can also obtain the original parts and everyone will soon be able to carry out iPhone or Mac repairs in the right way.

Some knowledge is required when carrying out the repairs. Apple says the Self-Service repairs are intended “for individuals who have sufficient technical knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices themselves.”

Parts can be ordered through a new Online Store for Self Service Repairs. There will soon be more than 200 parts and tools to perform common repairs with the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. First in the United States, but at a later moment the Netherlands and Belgium will undoubtedly follow.
