The Genesis G70 Shooting Brake has finally been officially presented. The car, which is a cross between a station wagon and a hatchback, appears to be specifically intended for the European market.
The Genesis G70 Shooting Brake has already regularly passed by on spy images and was already shown in camouflaged form by the luxury brand of Hyundai this week. We can now see it completely, although it is still a ‘preview’ and at the time of writing only a limited amount of somewhat obscure photos have been released.
However, those photos make it clear what the G70 Shooting Brake looks like. The car seems to be more entitled to the name ‘Shooting Brake’ than the station wagons so called by Mercedes, although this name remains debatable on a five-door. The big difference with a real station wagon is that the Genesis does not have an extra set of side windows above the rear axle. The side window stops at the Genesis so right with the rear door, immediately followed by a thick C-pillar. The glass that can still be seen behind it is the rear window. Due to its convex shape, it grips firmly ‘around the corner’ and that has consequences for both the design and the width of the opening.
The rear window is also very flat and is assisted at the bottom by light units that, unlike the four-door G70, extend into the tailgate. However, the structure of two layers is retained, which results in a recognizable Genesis face. Striking: the rear light parts mounted in the lid do not connect directly to the rear lights next to the lid, but leave a few centimeters of sheet metal free.
40 percent more luggage space
The rear overhang is the same as on the G70 sedan, which is usually the case with real station wagons. In terms of dimensions, both body styles are therefore exactly the same. The G70 Shooting Brake is also 4,685 mm long, 1,850 mm wide and 1,400 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,835 mm. Luggage space is up to 40 percent more for the newcomer thanks to the increased height, Genesis says. Those who want to expand things can also fold the rear seat into three parts.
For the rest, the G70 Shooting Brake is the same as the G70 sedan, which was thoroughly renewed in 2020 and has not yet arrived in Europe in both old and new form. However, South Korean Genesis announced earlier that this will soon change. The G70 Shooting Brake is at the forefront of the European market launch. We Europeans are traditionally fond of five-door models and less fond of sedans, so that seems like a smart move. Genesis wants to show that it takes the European market seriously. The brand is currently even suggesting that this model will only be available in Europe, although that can of course change at any time.
Genesis does not yet mention engines. The sedan comes with a two-liter turbo engine with 252 hp, a 3.3 V6 with about 370 hp and a 2.2 CRDi diesel, engines that in principle drive the rear wheels. The range of delivery can be very different for Europe. The larger G80 is now even available as an EV, although similar plans for other models have not yet been announced.
