Genesis is already breathing down the neck of the German and Japanese competition in various countries, but the range is not yet complete. For even more success, the Koreans seem to be working on a real coupé SUV, in the form of a GV80 with a steeply sloping roofline.
Forgive us, but with the combination of ‘Genesis’ and ‘Coupé’ we first had to think of that nice Hyundai Genesis Coupé from over a decade ago. The new Genesis ‘Coupé’ has little to do with that playful rear-wheel drive, but that is undoubtedly only good news when it comes to sales figures. What’s driving here looks like a smoothed-out version of the largest SUV in Genesis’ current lineup. The Genesis GV80 is a competitor of cars such as the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE, not entirely coincidentally the segment from which the SUV coupe once emerged. Without a third row of seats, but with a steeply sloping roofline, the ‘GV80 coupé’ – there is no real name yet – would be a direct rival of the BMW X6 and the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé.
The implementation of this idea does not seem to be very creative, because just like with the X6 and GLE, we ‘simply’ see a flat rear window and a roofline that starts to drop from the B-pillar. At the same time, the carriage of the GV80 photographed here is slightly different here and there from the GV80 we already know. That may mean that Genesis coincides the arrival of this smooth version with the presentation of a facelifted GV80. The back of the coupé variant is still strongly camouflaged and can just bring along some design-technical surprises. After all, we are used to that from Genesis.
The Netherlands
Genesis is Hyundai’s luxury brand and is active in South Korea, the US and Germany, among others. Dutch activities are planned, but most likely Genesis will only carry fully electric models here. In concrete terms, this means that we will not officially see this GV80 on the price lists here.
