Getting started with internet banking

Getting started with internet bankingEasily manage your banking at home on your computer, phone or tablet. Start with internet banking at your bank.

The name says it all. Internet banking is arranging banking affairs via the internet. From checking the balance on the account to transferring money, it’s all digital. The giro collection form or often having to pay by debit card is therefore a thing of the past.

All major banks in the Netherlands offer the option of internet banking. To get started, you must first apply to the bank. It then sends login details. From now on you will have access to the bank’s website and your bank details. In some cases you will also receive a card reader. This is a device that generates codes for extra security. This is necessary to transfer money, for example. If you are also going to use mobile banking (explained later in the article), then you usually no longer need a card reader. The identification is then done via the special app on the phone or tablet.

Many people use internet banking every day. That makes it interesting for cyber criminals to focus on this. Fortunately, internet banking in the Netherlands is very well secured. The banks ensure the safe execution of transactions and a secure connection. In addition, they do fraud detection and disrupt viruses from cyber criminals. Partly due to these measures, the damage caused by internet crime is not too bad.

But the responsibility for secure internet banking does not lie solely with the banks. Also the users can help to keep it safe. Read how you can contribute to this in the article ‘Secure internet banking: what to do?‘.

Banks now also offer the option of banking via a smartphone or tablet. We often call this mobile banking. A special app from the bank is required for this. Contrary to popular belief, such a banking app is extremely secure. It is even safer than internet banking on the PC.

First of all, the app itself is secured with a PIN code, fingerprint or facial recognition. Secondly, all banking traffic goes through the app. This traffic is encrypted. As a result, no one can intercept the data traffic. If the device is stolen or lost, simply block access to the app. This can often be done online via internet banking or by calling the bank.
