GM is working on electric Corvette crossover

General Motors wants to turn Corvette into a new performance label and is working on an electric crossover under that label, reports Bloomberg based on internal sources. The EV must combine sporty and practical features, but is otherwise shrouded in a dense fog.

Almost every sports car brand or label has recently turned to the SUV or crossover. Even Ferrari, which for a long time insisted on not wanting the SUV, is working on it. The Chevrolet Corvette doesn’t seem to escape either. The insiders report that General Motors wants to make Corvette a performance label with multiple models in order to appeal to a broader target group. This currently has the formal status of a strategic plan, but an electric crossover with the Corvette label will probably be on the market after 2025. It is not yet known what this EV will look like or what the specifications are, but chances are that the new member will be on GM’s Ultium platform. Furthermore, the car must combine the “sporty character of the Chevrolet Corvette with greater practicality.”

That idea is of course not new. Porsche once started with the Cayenne and now the concept of the sporty SUV with cars like the Lamborghini Urus and the Aston Martin DBX has become commonplace. What GM may be doing with Corvette, however, is best compared to what Ford has done with the Mustang Mach-E. In that case, Ford has also used an iconic name for an electric crossover that has little to do with the Mustangs of yesteryear.

For GM it would be a big step to expand the model line. According to the sources, the idea of building various Corvettes has been playing for some time, but the concern feared the wrath of the purists. However, with the Chevrolet Corvette C8’s mid-engine, the manufacturer already went in a quite different direction, so an electric crossover can also be added. The plan seems plausible, but the coming years will show what will eventually become of it.
