Hummer is back! This time not as a manufacturer of angular automobile tanks, but as a GMC model. And what a model! The new Hummer is gigantic and completely electric!
It is a special year for car enthusiasts who are nostalgic. Ford brought back the Bronco, Nissan comes with a new Z peppered with retro details and it is the American manufacturer GMC that is again dusting the name ‘Hummer’. The first rumors that GMC wanted something with Hummer surfaced back in 2014. Today they have finally become concrete. And how!
The GMC Hummer is an electric pick-up with which General Motors seems to want to put its teeth directly into Tesla’s Cybertruck, which is now in the pipeline. The specifications of the reborn titanium are outrageous in every way. We start with the appearance, which is at least as special as the powertrain. The Hummer is in fact overloaded with details that refer to the mighty H1 and the more consumerist sauce-doused cars like the H2 and the H3. GMC’s Hummer is angular, has a very recognizable front and is laced with an H-motif that returns in various places. Removable roof panels also make it possible to plow through the terrain semi-open with mach 2.

However retro the GMC Hummer may be, in various areas it breaks with its forefathers. The interior is more modern than ever. You will not find analog clocks there, because the interior is packed with displays and screens. The extremely angular shapes also stand out in the interior. Then the specifications. Up to three electric motors give the GMC Hummer an output of 1,014 hp and 15,592 Nm. Oof. The soil conceals General Motors’ Ultium battery technology, in which various modules in the battery pack communicate with each other via Wi-Fi, which means that considerably less wiring would be required. In addition, the Ultium batteries would contain up to 70 percent less cobalt than the more conventional ones. The Hummer is also equipped with a mode that GMC refers to as ‘crab mode’. Thanks to four steering wheels, the Hummer EV should be able to move diagonally. Handy to better position the car in the terrain, although we can well imagine that the mode can also be used when parking the colossus. GMC gives an estimated range of about 565 kilometers. A sprint to a speed of 97 km / h (60 mpg) is over in about three seconds.

GMC gives the Hummer adaptive light suspension and puts it on Goodyear’s gigantic 35-inch off-road rubber. The bottom of the car is protected by sturdy skid plates and a set of cameras on both front and rear watch during adventures off the asphalt. The reborn Hummer debuts as – how could it be otherwise – Edition 1. That special version includes the Cadillac-based SuperCuise, a system that makes it possible to drive around reasonably autonomously.
The starting price of the Hummer EV, which is around € 67,500. That amount is for the basic version that will not be released to the US market until the spring of 2024. However, this version has two electric motors, is 634 hp and has one range of about 402 kilometers. Higher on the menu is the Hummer EV2X, which is just as powerful as the entry-level model, but should be able to reach a range of over 480 kilometers. The first flavor with three electric motors costs around € 82,500 and is 800 hp strong. To be range is also about 480 kilometers. It won’t hit the US market until the fall of 2022. The top version is the aforementioned 1,014 hp variant with three electric motors and an expected range of 565 kilometers. This is the only variant of the Hummer that will hit the US market this year. Its starting price: about € 95,000 converted. The GMC Hummer is not coming to the Netherlands.
