Google Maps recently got a new look and it takes some getting used to. A former Google Maps designer himself thinks it’s a mess.
New look Google Maps is terrible
Last week, Google Maps started rolling out a new look for the popular mapping service. A number of striking changes have been implemented. For example, paved roads are clearer to see, but hiking trails are a lot harder to recognize. Highways are now gray and less noticeable. However, that is not the only thing that has been adjusted.
A former designer at Google Maps also had her say on X (former Twitter) about the new look. In fact, she doesn’t like the new look of Google Maps at all. The colors of water and parks are now too similar and almost blend into each other. But there is another point where she has more problems.
She especially finds all the ‘clutter’ on the map annoying. According to her, there are now too many elements on the map. She especially thinks the buttons below the search field are too much of a good thing.
The former designer at Google Maps says that the map is the most important part of the app and should always be central. Only things that are really useful are allowed on there. She also provides a possible solution to improve the new look of Google Maps.
She leaves the search bar at the top, but the navigation button ends up at the bottom. This new bar will then contain most of the other functions and buttons.
She goes on to say that Google Maps had also become a mess in 2007. And that they tried to cram new features all over the app. Then Google Maps also received a redesign. According to her, it’s time to do that again.
