Google Maps has released a new feature, which secretly scanned screenshots on your iPhone. Don’t you want that? This way you switch off the feature.
Google Maps adds function
Another update for Google Maps is coming! Google has previously announced that the navigation service will be expanded this year with a series of new functions. One of those new features will soon be added, which gives Google Maps access to all screenshots on your iPhone. With the help of Google Gemini, these screenshots are searched at possible locations for Google Maps.
Google Gemini is the new technique of the company, which works with artificial intelligence. In the new version of Google Maps, Gemini is used to search all screenshots on your iPhone. The navigation service does this to add locations to a new list in Google Maps. That way you no longer have to store certain locations manually, instead, making a screenshot is sufficient.

This is how you prevent it
In the new version, Google Maps will have access to all your screenshots to check them at possible locations. That is useful, because for example, places are automatically added to a list in Google Maps. In this way, restaurants or holiday destinations that you have visited are easy to find back. You do handle privacy, because Google Maps must gain access to all your screenshots. Don’t you want that? Then switch off the following function:
- Open ‘settings’ on your iPhone;
- Scroll down and open ‘Apps’;
- Select ‘Google Maps’;
- Tap ‘photos’;
- Finally, choose ‘None’ under ‘Access to Fotobe Library’.
Have you adjusted the settings on your iPhone? In that case, Google Maps no longer has access to photos or screenshots on your device. This way you know for sure that your screenshots are not used by Google Gemini. Do you want to use the function, but shield certain photos? Then choose ‘Limited access’ under ‘Access to Photo Library’. You then decide to which images Google Maps has access.

More about Google Maps
The new function in Google Maps is first rolled out on iPhones that are set in English. It is expected that the feature will soon be available in other languages. For example, Google recently released a new Google Gemini app for the iPhone. It is therefore probably not long before Google Gemini is added to the navigation service. In the Netherlands and Belgium, Google Maps will soon be scanning screenshots on the iPhone.
Therefore, keep an eye on the updates for Google Maps, because the new function will probably be added quickly to the navigation service. Chances are that Google Maps does not yet have access to your photo library, that will only happen after installing the next update. Do you not want Google Maps to check your screenshots at possible locations? Then adjust the settings on your iPhone after installing the latest software version from Google Maps. It is still unknown when the new function will be rolled out here, that will probably happen soon.
