Which navigation app can you best choose if you have your privacy high in order, Google Maps, Waze or TomTom? We figured it out!
Google Maps, Waze or TomTom?
It may be clear that all navigation apps that you use on your iPhone use data from you to take you from A to B. But how do they continue with that data? And which app can you best use if you attach great importance to your privacy, Google Maps, Waze or TomTom?

The pros and cons
Google Maps, Waze and TomTom all have their advantages and disadvantages. There are differences in functionality, but certainly also in privacy. We list the most important aspects of each app for you.
Google Maps
The best known of the three is probably Google Maps, which is very accurate when it comes to navigation. The app can be used worldwide and has many extra functions, such as Street View and Public Transport. However, Google Maps uses your location and search data not only for navigation, but also to create profiles for advertisements. You can disable a number of things, but by default, Google Maps collects your data.
Waze
Waze excels in real-time traffic information. Thanks to the community you will receive notifications for flash units, traffic jams and accidents. Waze is owned by Google, so here too your data is collected and shared with Google for advertisements. Although you can make reports anonymously along the way, your driving behavior and routes are usually stored.
TomTom
TomTom is a European company (even Dutch) and therefore falls under the strict EU privacy legislation AVG (General Data Protection Regulation). The TomTom app collects anonymous traffic data for determining the traffic, but does not link this to your identity as standard. Your data is also not used for advertisements. The community of TomTom is smaller, but your privacy is much better protected in relation to the other two apps.
Conclusion: Google Maps, Waze or TomTom?
Both Google Maps, Waze and TomTom bring you in a reliable way from A to B. In addition, Google Maps has by far the most extra functions. Waze best makes use of the community with reports of traffic information. The only disadvantage is that these apps are both from Google and that your data is used by Google for advertisements. That is something TomTom does many times better. Your data is therefore the safest at TomTom!
