Guest account iPhone: lending your device will soon be safe

Apple has a new patent describing a guest account for your iPhone. This makes it a lot safer to lend your iPhone.

Guest account for your iPhone: your secrets will soon be even more secure

Every now and then it is useful to give your iPhone to someone else. For example, consider taking a photo or if you want to briefly show a specific app. There is a disadvantage to this: that person will have access to almost all your data on your iPhone.

If it’s a family member or a good friend, it doesn’t matter that much. But if you’re giving the iPhone to someone you don’t know very well, you need to be a little more careful. In that sense, wouldn’t it be more convenient if you could quickly switch the iPhone to a kind of ‘guest account’?

That’s not possible yet, but it seems like Apple is thinking about it. Apple recently filed a new patent that talks about a kind of “guest access.”

According to this patent, you can then activate a guest mode on your iPhone for other users. You can then indicate which apps and settings are available for this guest account on your iPhone. This means you can safely give someone your device without them possibly (accidentally) deleting something important.

The patent also states that there is some kind of authentication associated with the guest account. There is also talk that you can manage the account from another device.

iOS 18 can already protect apps

Right now, there’s no way to activate any sort of guest mode on your iPhone. But iOS 18 has already taken a few first steps. You can hide some apps in the latest operating system. It is also possible to set up Face ID for specific apps.

Still, a guest account for your iPhone would be an easier solution. As long as you can switch between accounts smoothly.
