Xiaomi was still in the news last quarter because the Chinese phone maker had boxed it into second position in the global smartphone market in a relatively short time. Had, because according to IDC it has now lost that position to the company that normally takes second place: Apple.
Xiaomi does not beat Apple
Xiaomi sold more smartphones than Apple in the second quarter of 2021 and was able to fight for that second position, behind the Korean Samsung. In the meantime, however, the roles have been reversed: the ‘regular’ player 2 is back. Apple seems to have sold more iPhones in the third quarter than Xiaomi saw its Android devices sold.
More specifically, IDC says Apple shipped 50.4 million smartphones in the third quarter of 2021, versus just under 6.1 million Xiaomi phones. That is a huge difference, but that can be explained: the new iPhone 13 family appeared at the end of September. In addition, there are more factors that play into the development of lists of market shares of smartphone brands, such as profit, but in terms of the number of phones shipped in the third quarter of 2021, Apple is really the winner of the second place. Samsung is still the best known number 1 with 69 million phones.
Huawei wiped out
It must be said: these are not official figures, but estimates from IDC. Curious about fourth and fifth place? Those are for Vivo and Oppo (which go hand in hand). A very different list than in the past, when Huawei even won against Samsung. Huawei is no longer even in the top 10 when it comes to the number of phones shipped in Q3 of 2021. We do not expect the brand back soon either. In addition, it has also started to focus more on other tech, such as monitors, game accessories, network technology and even solar panel components.
Xiaomi is also a company that is active in several tech markets, although it must continue to focus on making good smartphones and ditto advertising if it wants to surpass Apple again.
