You’ve probably noticed that after a while your iPhone is a lot slower than when you bought it – with these iPhone tips you can do something about that!
iPhone slower? This is how you solve it!
Once you’ve had your iPhone for a year or two, that initial speedy performance starts to wane. This is mainly because the device is full of junk and works inefficiently. New iOS updates often introduce features that require more resources, and a build-up of background apps and forgotten settings puts more and more demands on your iPhone. With a few simple iPhone tips you can solve all this in one go and your iPhone will be as fast as you were used to!
1. Limit Background Refresh
There are quite a few apps that are refreshed in the background without you noticing. Even if you don’t use those apps at all. This results in slower performance and also drains the battery faster. So not a bad idea to limit this. This is how you do it:
- Open the Settings app;
- Tap ‘General’ and scroll down a little;
- Tap Background Refresh.
Here you can disable the option completely, or only allow it for certain apps. The latter is probably preferable, because for some apps it is important that they are always up to date.

2. Clear history and website data in Safari
If Safari’s cache is full of all kinds of unimportant information, browsing the Internet becomes slower and slower. You can solve this with the ‘Clear history and website data’ function, which works as follows:
- Open the Settings app;
- Scroll down and tap ‘Apps’;
- Go to ‘Safari’ and tap it;
- Scroll a bit and tap ‘Clear history and website data’.

3. Delete apps you don’t use
Not only is this one of the obvious tips, it’s also one of the most effective. First, they probably take up more storage space than you think. And the more charged your iPhone is, the slower it becomes. Simply long-press on an app you want to delete and then choose ‘Delete app’ from the quick menu that appears. Then tap ‘Delete’ again.

4. Turn off Location Services for unimportant apps
Thanks to the Location Services option, a navigation app or rain radar knows exactly where you are, so that is very useful. But a game or photo editing app really doesn’t need to know that. It only costs battery life and, in the worst case, it makes your iPhone even slower. So disable this for apps that don’t need it! This is how you do it:
- Open the Settings app;
- Tap Privacy & Security;
- Tap ‘Location Services;
Here you determine per app whether the function is allowed or not. For many apps you can set the option to ‘Never’, if in doubt choose ‘When using the app’ or ‘Ask next time or when I share’.

5. Convert your Live Photos
A Live Photo captures what happens just before and after the recording, including the audio. While this is certainly a nice feature, Live Photos take up significantly more storage space than regular photos. It is therefore a good idea to look at all your Live Photos again. Don’t they necessarily need the exercise? Then convert them to regular photos. This way you can easily create more storage space.
