Heavy Peugeot 508 Peugeot Sport Engineered extensively shown

It has been officially known for a year that Peugeot intends to add a sporty top version to the delivery range of the 508. The most powerful 508 gets a plug-in hybrid powertrain, but a production version has still not been presented. Today Peugeot shows a new set of photos of its upcoming sports enthusiast.

In February last year, Peugeot presented the 508 Sport Engineered Concept with a heavily decorated 508 with which the French looked ahead to a very potent version of its ‘sedan’. Around this time last year, Peugeot CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato confirmed on Twitter that the brand would build the car, but there is as yet no actual production version. Peugeot is now showing a new set of photos of its sporty 508 for the second time, and that gives the suspicion that a final unveiling can not be long in coming.

Peugeot now calls the heavy 508 simply ‘508 PSE’, a name where the last three letters stand for Peugeot Sport Engineered. Although the car looks slightly milder than the concept car that was presented last year, the sporty plug-in promises to be a potent version. The concept car was equipped with a 200 hp 1.6 that worked together with two electric motors, together good for a system power of 400 hp. Peugeot already supplies the 508 with a 225 hp plug-in hybrid powertrain and the 3008 is as Hybrid4, also a plug-in, good for a system power of 300 hp. Those powertrains seem to be too little for the 508 ‘PSE’. Recently, sister brand DS presented the DS9, a car that will be available with a 360 hp plug-in hybrid powertrain, among other things. It is quite possible that Peugeot also spoons that drivetrain in the 508. Should that be the case, the 508 Peugeot Sport Engineered will be a four-wheel drive. We expect more information later this year on the production-ready sporty 508 ever.
