Hide WhatsApp online status: it will finally be possible

When you open WhatsApp, everyone can see that you’re online – and there’s no setting to turn this off. Soon it will probably be possible to hide your online status in WhatsApp.

The blue check marks could already be turned off in WhatsApp, just like the ‘Last seen’ status. But one thing is always visible to everyone: your online status. Even for non-contacts.

As discovered by WABetaInfo, it will soon be possible to hide this online status. As you can see in the screenshot below, you will find a new setting in the app that allows you to specify who can see your online status. You have two options: everyone and ‘same as last seen’.

If you choose ‘same as last seen’ and you have indicated that no one is allowed to know your ‘last seen’ status, your online status will also be hidden from everyone. If you have selected ‘Contacts’ under ‘Last seen’, then your online status will only be visible to your contacts.

The screenshot of WABetaInfo was made in a beta (test version) of WhatsApp. This means that the messaging service is testing the function, but it is not yet certain that WhatsApp will actually introduce the function. It is likely that this will happen, although we do not know exactly when.

Edit message

Hiding online status isn’t the only major innovation spotted in a recent WhatsApp beta. In late May, WABetaInfo discovered that WhatsApp is working on the ability to edit sent WhatsApp messages. Now it is only possible to delete them.

It appears that no edit history is visible, so the recipient will not see what the original message was. And the following also applies to this: the function is still under development, and there is no certainty yet that we will see it again (soon).
