According to rumors, Apple is working on a new generation of the HomePod mini. These features are coming to the HomePod mini 2 in 2025!

It has been more than four years since Apple released the HomePod mini. The first generation of the small speaker was released in 2020, but has only been available in the Netherlands and Belgium since 2022. In the four years since the official release of the HomePod mini, Apple has never released a successor. This seems to change in 2025, according to rumors Apple is working on the HomePod mini 2.

Apple analyst Mark Gurman has announced that Apple plans to release the HomePod mini 2 in 2025. According to him, the small speaker will mainly receive improvements under the hood, including a new processor. The new WiFi and Bluetooth chip is entirely produced by Apple itself. The HomePod mini 2 may be Apple’s first device with this processor, which gives the device support for WiFi 6 or WiFi 6E.

New processors

The new WiFi standard would be a big step for the small speaker, because the HomePod now still supports WiFi 4. With Apple’s own processor, the speaker’s wireless connection is much faster and more reliable. This means that the signal is less likely to be disturbed and the HomePod mini 2 will probably respond faster to the actions you perform on your iPhone, iPad, Mac (Book) or other Apple device.

In addition, the HomePod mini 2 will have a new S chip. This processor is probably not really new, because the speaker reportedly runs on the S8 or S9 chip. We are already seeing this in the Apple Watch Series 8 and Series 9. Both chips would be a major update for the HomePod, because the current generation still runs on the S5 chip. That processor was first used in 2019 and now needs to be replaced. With the S chip, the HomePod mini 2 does not support all features of Apple Intelligence.

Release of the HomePod mini 2

We will probably see (or hear) other improvements with the HomePod mini 2 in the audio quality of the speaker. According to rumors, the design of the HomePod mini will hardly be adjusted in the next generation. However, the small speaker is released in a number of new colors. It is still unclear which colors these are, the HomePod is now available in a blue, yellow, black, orange and white version.

In addition to the HomePod mini 2, there will also be a HomePod with a display in 2025, which works with features from Apple Intelligence and runs on tvOS. The release dates of the HomePod and the HomePod mini 2 are still unknown, rumors predict that the HomePod with screen will appear in March. Apple may also release the small version of the speaker.
