HomePod with display is delayed (but will arrive in 2025)

According to rumors, the new HomePod with display has been delayed, meaning that the device will no longer be released in early 2025. This is when we expect the speaker.

It has been clear for some time that Apple is working on a new generation of the HomePod, which will have a display for the first time. The current HomePod was released in 2023 and has a new touch surface. You’ll find this surface at the top of the speaker, where you control the volume and pause the audio. This is a small touchscreen, but that display will be much larger with the next HomePod.

It is expected that the new generation of the HomePod will have a 6- or 7-inch screen. That is comparable to the size of the iPad mini from 2021 and 2024, the small tablet has an 8.3-inch screen. According to rumors, Apple was planning to release the HomePod with display in early 2025, but the company is experiencing production issues. As a result, the speaker will probably appear (much) later.

Production problems cause delays

The usually reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has announced that Apple is having problems with the software of the new HomePod. While the HomePod 2023 still runs on the S7 chip, the next generation will probably use the A18 chip. The Apple TV runs on a similar processor, meaning tvOS may come to the HomePod with display in 2025. Developing and customizing tvOS for the HomePod is reportedly causing problems.

Kuo previously predicted that the next generation of the HomePod would be released in the first quarter of 2025. Due to software problems, this is no longer feasible and the release has been postponed. The HomePod with display will probably only arrive in the third or fourth quarter of 2025. This means that we will only see the updated speaker after the WWDC. WWDC may therefore be the moment when Apple officially announces the HomePod.
