HP announces new versions of its gaming laptops, such as the Omen 16. This variant offers, among other things, the twelfth generation Intel processor, as well as the Ryzen 6000 H processor series, from AMD. What else is changing under the hood?
The new HP Omen 16 can also be equipped with the Nvidia Nvidia’s RTX 3070 Ti, with 150 watts of TDP, as well as up to 32 GB of working memory and fast PCi 4.0 SSDs. The AMD variant has a maximum of 1 TB; the Intel version offers 2 TB.
Looking at the laptop’s design, it’s identical to last year’s model. The biggest, optical difference with that variant is the touchpad. It’s a lot wider this time. Furthermore, everything in terms of design has remained intact, including the large 16:10 screen with a thick chin at the bottom. By default, that screen offers full HD at 60 Hertz; but you can upgrade that to qhd and 165 hertz.
If you opt for the model with the Intel processor on board, there are two Thunderbolt 4.0 ports on the side of the HP Omen 16. The AMD versions have to do without. In addition, we also see three USB-a ports, one HDMI 2.1 port, a micro-SD card slot, a headphone jack and an Ethernet port. Finally, there is an opening for the power cable.
HP releases new cooling system
HP also claims that the cooling system within the Omen 16 has been overhauled. For example, a fifth heat pipe has been added and a fourth opening from which the laptop blows warm wind, so that the animal can stay cool during intense gaming sessions. This should also result in a processor power increase of 36 percent (but it is now unclear in which situations HP tested this). Furthermore, the temperature of the SSD has dropped by fourteen percent and the system must be five percent quieter.
Furthermore, there are no notable differences with last year’s model. Since the laptop is aimed at gamers, you can set the color per key via RGB. You can check this via the Omen Gaming Hub, one of the programs that is standard on the device. Finally, there is support for WiFi 6e, so you are at least provisionally provided for when it comes to new WiFi standards.
Price and availability
HP has not yet announced when or whether this version of the Omen 16 will come to the Netherlands. But in the United States, the laptop should be on sale from the summer, for a minimum price of $1,999.
