Apple has announced iPadOS 17! Unfortunately, the update is not coming to all iPads. We tell you which iPads will get iPadOS 17 (and which ones won’t).
Apple unveils iPadOS 17
At this year’s WWDC, Apple unveiled a new update for your iPad. iPadOS 17 brings some cool new features to your iPad. It will soon finally be possible to add (interactive) widgets to the lock screen and you will be able to choose from different clocks. In addition, the Health app comes to your iPad, so you no longer need an iPhone to see your health data.

Many features we saw coming to the iPhone in iOS 16 now appear in iPadOS 17 on the iPad. For example, it is finally possible to add widgets to the home screen and Live activities will soon be available on the iPad. However, these new features will not be available to everyone, because a number of iPads lack support for iPadOS 17.
iPadOS 17 support
Usually, when a new iPadOS version is released, support for the update is missing with an older generation iPad. This year is no different, for example it is not possible to install iPadOS 17 on the fifth generation iPad. Are you curious whether your iPad does support the new iPadOS update? These are the iPads on which iPadOS 17 can be downloaded:
- iPad 2018 (sixth generation)
- iPad 2019 (seventh generation)
- iPad 2020 (eighth generation)
- iPad 2021 (ninth generation)
- iPad 2022 (tenth generation)
- iPad mini 2019 (fifth generation)
- iPad mini 2021 (sixth generation)
- iPad Air 2019 (third generation)
- iPad Air 2020 (fourth generation)
- iPad Air 2022 (fifth generation)
- iPad Pro 2018 (second generation)
- iPad Pro 2020 (third generation)
- iPad Pro 2021 (fourth generation)
- iPad Pro 2022 (fifth generation)
Can’t download iPadOS 17 on your iPad? Then don’t worry, because Apple still releases security updates for older iPads. No new functions will be added to the tablet, but the security of the iPad will not be compromised. This way, your data on an older iPad is still well protected.
Just a little patience: iPadOS 17 will be released in the fall
The beta version of iPadOS 17 is already available to developers. A public beta version of the update will be released next month. The general public will have to wait a little longer, because the final version of iPadOS 17 will not be released until the fall. Last year, iPadOS 17 appeared on September 12, so we can expect the new software update around the same date this year.
