Do you still have an iPhone 14 Pro? And are you curious whether the camera of the iPhone 16 Pro is worth the switch from the iPhone 14 Pro? We have listed the most important differences for you!
iPhone 14 Pro vs iPhone 16 Pro
Apple has released the iPhone 16 Pro, which as expected has an improved camera. The ultra-wide-angle camera takes sharper photos, especially in low light. Taking photos and videos is also easier with the completely new camera controller. How much better is the iPhone 14 Pro’s camera compared to the iPhone 16 Pro’s? These are the biggest differences!
Overview
1. Upgraded ultra-wide-angle camera
Apple has greatly improved the ultra-wide-angle camera on the iPhone 16 Pro. While the iPhone 14 Pro (and iPhone 15 Pro) still has a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, the iPhone 16 Pro has 48 megapixels. This means that you can take much sharper macro photos with the latest iPhone. This mode is especially suitable if you take photos up close, as much more detail is captured.
We see no differences with the main camera (the wide-angle camera), both iPhones have a 48-megapixel camera. The iPhone 14 Pro is the first iPhone with this camera and Apple has made few adjustments to it since then. Still, you can see a difference in the photo quality, because the iPhone 16 Pro takes standard photos with 24 megapixels. On the iPhone 14 Pro this is ‘only’ 12 megapixels, which means the image quality is higher on the iPhone 16 Pro.
2. Zoom in much further
In addition to the ultra-wide-angle camera, Apple has added the tetraprism lens to the iPhone 16 Pro. With this lens you can zoom in up to 5x optically on the latest iPhone. The iPhone 14 Pro has to do without the tetraprysal lens, which allows you to zoom in up to 3x without loss of quality. Do you use the zoom lens regularly, for example at concerts? Then the iPhone 16 Pro is a big step forward.
Also good to know: the iPhone 16 Pro has an aperture of Æ’/1.78 for the wide-angle camera. On the iPhone 14 Pro this is Æ’/1.78, which makes the phone more difficult to take photos in low light. The iPhone 16 Pro takes better photos in the dark, where the colors come across better. Do you think this is an important function of the phone? Then the difference between the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro is certainly noticeable.
3. Video and audio functions
Not only do you take sharper photos with the iPhone 16 Pro than with the iPhone 14 Pro, the new phone also has more video functions. The iPhone 16 Pro supports Dolby Vision up to 4K at 120 fps. With this technique, colors appear much more realistic. Especially in combination with the higher image quality, this ensures better videos with the iPhone 16 Pro. Another advantage: the lenses of the iPhone 16 Pro have an anti-reflective layer, which prevents annoying reflections.
While the iPhone 14 Pro has limited functions when editing videos, Apple has significantly expanded the menu on the iPhone 16 Pro. Especially with the audio, you now have more settings that you can adjust. Don’t like the sound of a video? Then you can choose from three voice profiles on the iPhone 16 Pro: in frame, studio and film. This way you can adjust the sound to your own liking, which is useful if you are difficult to understand in a video. The iPhone 14 Pro lacks these features (called Audiomix by Apple).
4. Better post-processing of photos
With the iPhone 16 Pro, Apple has added a new generation of Photographic styles. This gives you much more choice when post-processing images than you have with the iPhone 14 Pro. With the new styles, you are less likely to need another app (or no app at all) for photo editing. With the iPhone 14 Pro you also have a choice of photographic styles, but you cannot adjust these afterwards. For example, you can no longer convert a black and white photo to color, while this is possible with the iPhone 16 Pro.
The same goes for portrait photos. With the iPhone 14 Pro, you must decide before taking the photo whether it will be a portrait photo or not. Are you not turning on portrait mode? Then you can no longer add a portrait effect afterwards. This is possible with the iPhone 16 Pro, so you can convert any image to portrait mode even after capturing. These features are especially interesting if you take a lot of photos and edit them regularly.
5. Camera controller and Visual Intelligence
Capturing photos and videos is much easier with the iPhone 16 Pro, because the phone has the completely new camera control. With this button you have almost all camera functions at your fingertips. The button responds to different gestures, so you can press the button briefly or long to open the camera and take a photo. You can zoom in and out by swiping the slider. A handy addition that the iPhone 14 Pro must do without.
In addition, the iPhone 16 Pro has support for Apple Intelligence, the company’s new technology that works with artificial intelligence. A feature exclusive to the iPhone 16 Pro is called Visual Intelligence. With this feature, the iPhone provides information about objects in a photo. This way you can see which plant or animal it is or you can request the opening hours of a store with a photo of the store. The iPhone 14 Pro does not work with Apple Intelligence and therefore does not have Visual Intelligence.
Want to buy an iPhone 16 Pro?
The differences between the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro are large, especially when looking at the camera functions. With the iPhone 16 Pro you can zoom in much further without losing quality, take better photos in low light and have 24-megapixel photos as standard. On the iPhone 14 Pro this is only 12 megapixels, which means the images contain less detail and are less sharp.
Post-processing of photos and videos is also more extensive with the iPhone 16 Pro thanks to the new generation of photographic styles, portrait photos and the Audio Mix.
