With the iPhone 15 Pro, the design may change drastically. Thanks to Samsung, the technology for Face ID could be placed under the screen, so that the notch disappears.
iPhone 15 Pro with punch hole
Apple and Samsung are rivals, but they also work together. Samsung is a major supplier of parts for the iPhone. Every year, for example, Apple buys billions of euros worth of OLED panels from the South Korean tech giant.
Now Samsung is developing a new ‘Under Panel Camera’ technology that Apple plans to integrate into next year’s iPhone 15 Pro. This reports the Korean website The Elec based on anonymous sources. Thanks to the technology, Apple could place the Face ID system behind the screen.
With the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple already hoped to introduce a punch-hole design, where the selfie camera is hidden in a small camera hole. The components for Face ID had to be placed below the display. However, due to technical obstacles, Apple did not succeed in this, so the iPhone 14 Pro probably has two cutouts.
Face ID below the screen
Now the 2023 flagship appears to be the first iPhone to get the punch-hole design. Samsung would the Face ID sensors according to The Elec invisible to the naked eye, in the same way as the hidden camera under the screen of the Galaxy Z Fold3.

With the Fold3, the pixel density around the camera is lower than with the rest of the screen. This way the camera can shine through the display better to collect enough light. This ensures that you see the pixels properly and the quality of the photos is significantly less than with traditional selfie cameras.
We are therefore curious whether the under-panel Face ID works just as securely as the existing system. Samsung would first like to use the technology with its new foldable phone: the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Then it is the turn of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Before the iPhone 15 Pro (Max) appears, Apple will introduce the iPhone 14 series. You can read all about it in the articles below:
