Apple gives you a number of standard options with the action button of the iPhone 15 Pro (Max), but you can link many more tasks to the button! That is how it works.
New action button on the iPhone 15 Pro (Max)
Apple has said goodbye to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max for the first time mute-knob. On the new iPhones, this switch will be replaced by a new action button. We previously saw a similar button on the Apple Watch Ultra and is now coming to the iPhone for the first time. With the new iPhone you can decide for yourself which action is performed when you press the button.

However, when setting the action button of the iPhone 15 Pro (Max), you are limited to the options that Apple gives you. By default, you get a choice of nine tasks to connect to the button, such as opening the camera or turning the flashlight on and off. So you seem limited to the functions that Apple gives you, but much more is possible via Assignments with the new action button!
Add more tasks to the action button
One of the nine options that Apple gives you is to link the Assignments app to the action button. In this app you can add tasks (also called shortcuts) that Apple does not offer itself. With the Assignments app there are many more options when setting the action button. This app is standard on your iPhone. Don’t have the app? Then it can be downloaded here:
Have you installed the Shortcuts app on your iPhone? Then linking Assignments to the action button works as follows on the iPhone 15 Pro (Max):
- Open ‘Settings’ on your iPhone;
- Tap ‘Action button’;
- Swipe right until you see ‘Assignment’;
- Tap ‘Choose an assignment…’;
- Select the task you want to link to the action button.
With the iPhone 15 Pro (Max) you can now use Assignments to set what happens when you press the action button. You can also choose from a certain number of actions here, which have been pre-selected by Apple. This makes it possible to open an app of your choice when you press the action button, or to start a timer or Shazam. Which task you choose here depends of course on your personal preference.
Even more options via the Assignments app
Apple gives you a number of options by default in the Shortcuts app, but the big advantage of the app is that you can add more shortcuts yourself. These are developed by other iPhone users and can often be found on the internet. The action button of the iPhone 15 Pro (Max) has only just appeared, but it will probably not be long before the first useful shortcuts are shared on the internet.

Until then, you’ll have to make do with the tasks that Apple has already selected for you. It is advisable to link a function to the action button, which you often perform on your iPhone 15 Pro (Max). This often saves you a few actions, because you only have to press the new button once. For example, you can use the action button to open your favorite app at the touch of a button or immediately recognize a nice song with Shazam.
