iPhone 16 gets A18 chip
The 2024 iPhone event will take place on September 9. That evening, Apple will present the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. While Apple reused the processor from the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, this year all iPhones will get a completely new chip. The iPhone 16 series will reportedly run on the new A18 and A18 Pro chip.
Apple equips the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus with the A18 chip. With the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, the company goes one step further, because these devices run on the A18 Pro chip. It is more important than in previous years that all iPhones get a new processor. This has to do with the introduction of Apple Intelligence, which requires a lot of computing power for the new smartphones.
A18 chip with Apple Intelligence
With the A18 and A18 Pro chips, all iPhone 16 models will support Apple Intelligence. This is not the case with the iPhone 15, where only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will be expanded with the new AI features. Only last year’s A17 Pro chip supports Apple Intelligence. This year, all processors will work with Apple Intelligence, so you no longer need a Pro for the new features.
The A18 Pro chip in the iPhone 16 Pro (Max) is expected to be a lot faster and more powerful than the A18 chip in the iPhone 16 (Plus). All new iPhones this year will probably have 8 GB of RAM. That is also necessary, because many functions of Apple Intelligence are loaded locally on the iPhone. With more RAM and the more powerful A18 chip, that goes without a problem. With the iPhone 16 Pro (Max), that loading works a bit faster thanks to the A18 Pro chip.
Release of the iPhone 16
With the A18 chip, the iPhone can handle multiple heavy tasks at the same time. And that’s necessary, because with Apple Intelligence, many functions are loaded in the background. Apple Intelligence will later be available on all iPhones with an A17 Pro chip or later. With the new technology, almost all iPhone apps will be expanded with useful AI functions, which we will probably see in iOS 18.1 or iOS 18.2.
In Europe, we still have to wait a bit longer for Apple Intelligence. Here, the functions may not be available until 2025, the European Union and Apple are still in talks about this.
