There have been all kinds of rumors going around about the display of the iPhone 17 for some time. That is why we have listed all the innovations for you.
iPhone 17 display: these are all the improvements
It looks like Apple will be making all kinds of improvements to the display with the iPhone 17. And those are the biggest improvements we have seen in recent years. Think of higher refresh rates, use of advanced materials and improved energy efficiency.
Bigger screens
Apple may introduce a new screen size for the regular iPhone 17. The size would go from 6.1 to 6.3 inches, which corresponds to the size of the iPhone 16 Pro. Furthermore, it appears that the Plus model will be discontinued and a thin Air model will take its place. At 6.6 inches, this device would fall between the iPhone 15 (6.1 inches) and the iPhone 15 Plus (6.7 inches) in terms of size.
The entire iPhone 17 series probably consists of a standard 6.3-inch model, a 6.6-inch Air model, a 6.3-inch Pro model and a 6.9-inch Pro Max model.
120 Hz ProMotion for the entire series
Apple plans to expand the 120 Hz ProMotion technology to all iPhone models. Until now, only the ‘Pro’ models had this feature. ProMotion ensures, among other things, that the display of the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air can switch back to a more energy-efficient refresh rate of only 1 Hz. This makes an always-on function possible. The display then shows the clock, widgets, notifications and the lock screen wallpaper, even when the device is locked.
New energy-efficient technology
Apple may equip the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro models with a new display technology known as Low-Dielectric TEE (Transmission Electrically Enhanced). Although it is not yet clear what exactly this technique offers, the use of low-dielectric materials can likely reduce energy loss. This leads to more efficient power use and possibly a longer battery life.
Scratch-resistant screen without reflections
According to a rumor, the iPhone 17 will have an anti-reflective display that is more scratch-resistant than the Ceramic Shield of the iPhone 15 models. For this purpose, a very hard anti-reflective layer is added to the display of the iPhone 17. It’s not clear if Apple plans to adopt the Gorilla Glass Armor that Samsung uses in its Galaxy S24 Ultrabut the description of it matches the rumor. The new iPhone 16 Pro models have the latest generation Ceramic Shield, which, according to Apple, is 2x stronger than the glass on any other smartphone.
Smaller Dynamic Island
The iPhone 17 Pro Max will have a much narrower Dynamic Island. This is possible thanks to the use of a smaller metal lens for Face ID. A traditional iPhone camera has curved lenses that redirect light to the image sensor. A metal lens has a thin, flat lens with microscopic patterns etched onto it. That lens can focus the light more accurately. This should result in a smaller dynamic island. If so, it would be the first time Apple has changed the feature since it was introduced on the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022.
iPhone 17 will be released in September 2025
It will take a while before we know whether all these improvements will actually be implemented. The iPhone 17 series will probably be released in September 2025, so you’ll have to be patient for quite some time.
