The iPhone 17 (Plus) will have an OLED screen with ProMotion, giving standard iPhones an always-on screen for the first time.
iPhone 17 (Plus) gets a screen with ProMotion and always-on
The iPhone 15 (Plus) uses different panels than the iPhone 15 Pro (Max). The special LTPO (Low Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) panels of the iPhone 15 Pro Max have ProMotion, which means the screen supports a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz.

It is expected that Apple will continue to use the less advanced panels (without ProMotion) from the iPhone 15 in the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus to continue to distinguish between the standard and Pro models. This means that the 2025 iPhones will be the first to feature ProMotion and always-on displays across the entire lineup.
These are the advantages of ProMotion
If the iPhone 17 (Plus) gets ProMotion, that would of course be very nice. The refresh rate is adaptive. The display can switch all the way back to 1Hz, which is useful when 120Hz is unnecessary. For example, when you read a book on your device or check a web page.
The lower refresh rate also saves your iPhone’s battery, which is of course nice. In addition, every recent iPhone with ProMotion also has an always-on screen.
According to the Korean website The Elec Chinese supplier BOE hopes to supply the LTPO panels for the ProMotion screens of the iPhone 17 series to Apple.

The only question remains whether the company can achieve the required production capacity while meeting Apple’s quality standards. If this turns out not to be the case, Apple will likely turn to Samsung or LG Display.
