The new iPhone 17 Pro is without a doubt a powerhouse with a sleek design. The most recent iPhone also has improved cameras and lightning-fast performance. Yet there is something about this camera that is disappointing. In fact, a function is missing.

The feature that disappeared was in Portrait mode. On previous iPhones you could take a portrait photo in the dark using night mode. You can still take a portrait photo in the dark on the iPhone 17 Pro (Max), but night mode is gone. Apple has confirmed that this mode will not return for a while.

That might be a bit strange. Especially because the rest of the camera has received significant upgrades. The new cameras are more powerful, sharper and better at capturing details. The selfie camera has also been significantly improved, making video calling and vlogging even smoother.

For many users it probably won’t even be a problem. Those who mainly take photos or make videos during the day will hardly notice the missing function. But if you often take photos of your friends in a cozy restaurant in the evening, you will sometimes miss the function.

The night mode itself still works fine, but the lack of the camera function for portraits on the iPhone 17 Pro makes photos less atmospheric and less striking than you are used to. But perhaps Apple will bring the option back in a future update.
