They are both excellent smartphones, so you can’t make a real wrong choice. As usual, the Pro version has some extra things to offer. Whether they are worth the additional price or not, is of course very personal. That is why it is important to simply compare the devices.

Housing

If we look at the dimensions of both devices, they don’t really differ that much. The pro is slightly larger, but above all a bit thicker: the iPhone 17 comes to 149.6 x 71.5 x 8 mm, the iPhone 17 Pro at 150 x 71.9 x 8.8 mm. The pro is therefore also heavier: 206 grams compared to 177 grams. Both devices have an aluminum frame.

Screen

Both iPhones have a 6.3 inch Super Retina XDR OLED screen with the same resolution of 1206 x 2622 pixels. They are also both provided with promotion and always-on. The only real difference between the screens is that the screen of the iPhone 17 Pro is provided with an anti -reflection coating and that of the iPhone 17 is not.

Camera

The biggest differences between the iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Pro can be found at the camera. Both iPhones have a 48-megapixel wide-angle and a 48-megapixel ultragwood angle camera. Only the Pro also has a 48-megapixel zoom camera with a maximum of an 8x optical zoom. There is also a Lidar scanner (a kind of 3D sensor that can detect depth while photographing), which is also lacking on the ‘regular’ iPhone. The iPhone 17 Pro is clearly the best choice for real photography enthusiasts.

The front cameras on both devices are the same again (18-megapixel ultragro area camera).

Performance

The iPhone 17 Pro is faster than the iPhone 17. That is due to the A19 Pro chip (the iPhone 17 has an A19 chip) and the 12 GB of memory (the iPhone 17 has 8 GB of memory). With everyday use, however, you will not really notice a difference. They are both very quickly and support Apple Intelligence.

Only when you are going to play graphically heavy games or do video rendering, you notice that the Pro performs better. Also thanks to the new cooling system (Vapor Chamber) in it. If you never subject your iPhone to really heavy tasks, then you probably don’t need the extra computing power of the Pro either.

Battery

Here the differences are not huge. Although the Pro has a somewhat more powerful battery (3998 mAh) than the ‘regular’ model (3692 mAh), this in practice ensures a battery life that is only an hour longer: play 31 hours of video compared to 30 hours of playing video. Not really a decisive reason to choose the Pro.

The difference between the ‘regular’ iPhone and the Pro has become smaller in the iPhone 17 series. Only if you are a fanatic gamer or photophanate, the iPhone 17 Pro has enough extras that are worth the additional price: a faster processor, more memory, a 48-megapixel zoom camera with a maximum of 8x optical zoom. Even if you need 1 TB of storage space for whatever reason, you will automatically arrive at the Pro. For everyday use, however, you will certainly have sufficient to the ‘regular’ iPhone 17 and you can therefore save a few hundred euros.
