Apple is currently testing a brand new feature that will most likely be integrated into the iPhone 18 series – here’s what you need to know.
iPhone 18 gets a new feature
This is the time of year when Apple is finalizing many details of next year’s iPhone lineup. A new leak on Weibo confirms what we’ve heard before. And that’s a feature we haven’t seen on any iPhone yet.
The feature we’re talking about is under-display Face ID. Apple would make this possible through the use of micro-transparent glass panels. According to Weibo user Smart Pikachu Apple is testing this special glass to allow the TrueDepth system’s infrared sensors to pass through the panel without distortion. By placing Face ID under the screen, Apple can significantly reduce the size of the Dynamic Island. However, it is not likely that the Dynamic Island will immediately disappear completely.

18 Pro, 18 Pro Max and Fold
It is not clear from the Weibo message which iPhone models will have the Face ID function under the screen. Only the iPhone 18 series is referred to. According to previous rumors, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will receive the new Face ID function together with the foldable iPhone (Fold). It is unclear whether the iPhone 18 or iPhone Air 2 will receive the same upgrade.
There are also rumors that the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max and the iPhone Fold will be the first to hit the market. The iPhone 18 and the iPhone Air 2 will follow a few months later. Probably at the beginning of 2027. If this is correct, Apple will have more time to decide which new materials will be used in the early 2027 models.
It may also be that Apple expects shortages for the new materials that make Face ID possible under the screen. In that case, the interim period may mean that there is a greater chance that Apple will apply the new feature to the entire series.
