The iPhone SE 2022 is only half a year old. Yet there are already new rumors about the successor of this budget model. The iPhone SE 2023 would get the housing (and therefore the design) of the iPhone XR.
New iPhone SE gets less old-fashioned design
Apple introduced a new generation of the iPhone SE earlier this year. This iPhone SE 2022 is Apple’s most affordable phone to date. However, we were very disappointed that it got an outdated design. It is (just like the iPhone SE 2020) based on the iPhone 8 with a home button.
YouTuber Jon Prosser reports us in the podcast ‘Geared Up’ that the next iPhone SE will have the same housing and design as the iPhone XR. That means Apple is moving away from the home button and Touch ID altogether.
More modern design for the iPhone SE 4
Prosser reported in this podcast that the next-generation iPhone SE, also known as iPhone SE 4 or 2023, will be “just an iPhone XR.” Maybe Apple still has a storage shed full of these cases. In concrete terms, this means that the screen will become larger, that there will be a notch (notch at the top of the screen) and mainly that the iconic home button has seen better days.

And that’s a good thing. We were already done with the too small screen of the iPhone SE 2022. It ‘only’ has a 4.7-inch display. The iPhone XR (which is no longer sold by Apple) is much larger. In addition to the 6.1-inch LCD display, this 2018 device also has room for a larger battery.
Bad news for fans of the ‘mini’ iPhone
John Posser also points out that some iPhone 14 models will keep the A15 chip from the iPhone 13. He concludes that this could very well be the case for the iPhone SE 4. Earlier, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple is no longer giving the new iPhone SE the most powerful chip. We hope that in the new budget model of the iPhone at least improvements will be made in terms of the camera.
This news is not good for people who like a small phone. When the first iPhone SE was announced in 2016, Apple’s marketing was on top of it. It was the phone for lovers of a small size. With the news that the new iPhone SE will have the same housing and design as the iPhone XR, that means another mini-iPhone less. That’s a shame, especially now that there doesn’t seem to be an iPhone 14 mini coming.

At the same time, demand for the 2022 iPhone SE has been quite low, suggesting that people are no longer interested in buying an iPhone with a design from nearly a decade ago. On the other hand, a new design combined with a price of around 400 euros could make this Apple’s best-selling phone. We shall see! It is not yet clear when the iPhone SE 4 will be introduced. It may be next year, but Apple may be delaying the phone to 2024.
