Do you want to measure your height, but you don’t have a tape measure at hand? No problem! Use the Measure app on your iPhone. But this app can do much more!
Improved Measure app
It’s been a while since Apple’s Measure app got an update. However, for many it is an app that is quickly forgotten, so that a number of fun (and useful) functions are rarely used.
The app is free to install in the App Store and offers some nice features. We put together the three most useful functions for these iPhone tips:
1. Measure your height with your iPhone
You can easily measure your own or someone else’s height with the Measure app. This feature is available on iPhone 12 Pro (Max), iPhone 13 Pro (Max), and iPhone 14 Pro (Max). You do this as follows:
- Open the Measure app;
- Make sure the person you want to measure is in full view;
- Take the right distance from the person;
- A white line with the length appears;
- If you want to record the measurement, take a photo with the white button at the bottom right.
So this is an easy way to measure someone’s height. There are a number of caveats, because the measurement is approximate and can sometimes be incorrect. It is therefore smart to possibly do the measurement a second time, to make sure that no incorrect estimate has been made. However, the measurement remains an indication.
2. Measure distances with the Measure app
Also useful in the Measure app: you can measure distances in a room with the camera. To do this, open the Measure app again and point the white circle at the starting point from where you want to measure. To select the place, tap the white plus sign at the bottom of the screen.
By slowly aiming your phone at a different place, a white line appears with the distance from the starting point. When you reach the next point, lock it by tapping the white plus again. This way you measure the distance every time.
The best way to measure the distance is to walk to the spot, so your iPhone estimates the distance more accurately. Again, the measurement is only an estimate, the exact distance may differ slightly.
3. Use your iPhone as a spirit level
Finally, another useful feature of the Meten app: the app also serves as a spirit level. You can find this at the bottom right of the app, next to ‘Measure’. You can hold your phone horizontally and vertically, if the iPhone is level for a while, the screen turns green.
Be careful that your phone does not remain a bit crooked due to the volume buttons on the side, this can give a distorted picture. The spirit level is a very useful feature when hanging shelves, for example. In combination with the possibility to measure distances indoors, your iPhone is your best friend when you are doing odd jobs or moving house!
