Prevent your iPhone from overheating while on vacation
Of course, it’s no fun when you’re on holiday and can’t use your iPhone for a while because it’s overheated. But if your iPhone completely dies because of the heat, you’re of course even further from home. That’s why we have iPhone tips this week that will help prevent that. Some are obvious, others you might not have thought of at all. Check them all out!

1. Faster in the shade
We’ll start these iPhone tips with the importance of shade. Apple likes to brag about the brightness of iPhone screens, making them easy to read even in direct sunlight. At a brightness of 1000 or 2000 nits this works very well indeed. It just costs more power and generates more heat than using your iPhone in the shade.
In addition, direct sunlight radiates heat to materials such as metal and glass, causing your iPhone to quickly rise in temperature. If you need to use your iPhone for a long time, seek shade in time to protect both your iPhone and yourself.
2. Do not use demanding apps while charging
Number two of these iPhone tips is about a different heat source than the sun. Heat doesn’t just come from outside. Your iPhone’s processor has to work a lot harder when you play graphically demanding games, for example, which causes the device itself to generate more heat than normal.
Playing such games can also quickly drain your iPhone’s battery, so it makes sense that you’d want to charge it at the same time. However, this combination of intensive processing and charging increases heat generation even more. And that quickly leads to overheating. So don’t do it!
3. Pause after recording a video
Shooting video is a big demand on your iPhone: It’s capturing and storing several megabytes of data every second, and most of that footage is being processed simultaneously. Like expensive mirrorless cameras that can record high-quality video, your iPhone is eventually going to hit a thermal ceiling. And unlike many mirrorless cameras, your iPhone doesn’t have extra fans to dissipate heat.
Number three of these iPhone tips can be more important than you think, especially when recording long clips. You really need to take a break for a few minutes in between to let your iPhone cool down again.
4. Update your iPhone
Of course, number 4 of this week’s iPhone tips sounds like overly general advice: make sure your iPhone’s software is up to date. Still, it’s good advice. For example, a bug in iOS 17 caused many iPhone 15 Pros to overheat. Apple quickly released iOS 17.0.3 to fix the problem, but you had to update for that.
It is normal for an iPhone to become warm during and after a system update, because the software optimizes all kinds of data in the background. Fortunately, this is only a temporary temperature increase.
5. Use a heat-resistant case
If you can’t avoid the heat and often have to wait for your phone to cool down, consider buying a cheap thermal phone case to store your iPhone. These types of thermal cases also work at the other end of the spectrum, protecting your iPhone from cold weather when necessary.

6. General tips against overheating
Finally, some general things to keep in mind when you are somewhere where temperatures are high:
- Remove your iPhone from the case.
- Avoid exposing your iPhone to direct sunlight for extended periods of time.
- Don’t leave your iPhone in a car; there the temperature quickly rises to above 45 degrees.
- Do not charge your iPhone until you have given it a chance to cool down.
- Lower the screen brightness.
- Close apps you are not using.
- If possible, turning off Airplane Mode or your iPhone is a good idea.
