‘iPhone will never get an easy-to-replace battery’ – here’s why

It seems that Apple is evading European rules again, because the iPhone will probably never get a battery that is easy to replace. This is why.

New European legislation for batteries

The European Union has passed a new law that states that all smartphones must have a replaceable battery from 2027. This makes it prohibited for manufacturers such as Apple to attach batteries to the phone. With the new regulations, it should be easier from 2027 to replace the battery of your iPhone yourself.

The new European law is intended to reduce the burden on the environment. For example, your iPhone will last longer if you can easily put a new battery in it. Still, it doesn’t seem like Apple plans to put an easy-to-replace battery in the iPhone. Apple CEO John Ternus has explained in an interview what the company’s plans are to comply with the new law.

Replacing the iPhone battery remains difficult

According to the CEO, it is important that replacing a battery with the iPhone is done safely and effectively. According to Ternus, installing a new battery is accompanied by sealing the phone, so that the iPhone remains water-resistant or waterproof. To make sure this is done correctly, you will probably still have to go to an Apple retailer for a new battery after 2027.

That is not the only reason, because Apple also analyzes the data collected from the repair program. According to Ternus, this data can be used to determine which parts of the iPhone are good and which can be improved. If everyone can replace the battery of the iPhone themselves, Apple will have a lot less insight into this data.

iPhone 14 is already easier to repair

Meanwhile, Apple makes it easier to repair iPhones. One of the biggest changes with the iPhone 14 was the way in which the device could be taken apart. With the iPhone 14 (Plus), it is possible to open the glass back of the phone without breaking the glass. This makes it easier for providers to replace the battery of the iPhone.

Unfortunately, this is not possible with the iPhone 14 Pro (Max). It is expected that this will change with the iPhone 15. All models of the iPhone 15 are then easier to disassemble. So you still can’t replace the battery of the iPhone yourself, but it will be cheaper in any case. And that will not change for the time being, if we are to believe Apple’s CEO.
