Kia EV6 – Back to Basics

Kia EV6 – Back to Basics

The Kia EV6 is the first Kia car to be developed as a purely electric vehicle. The fierce EV6 GT with 584 hp caused quite a stir, but on the other side of the price list, the EV6 is just as interesting.

Kia EV6 58 kWh

€ 44,595

The starting price of the EV6 makes it slightly more expensive than its relative Hyundai Ioniq 5, but it is a good € 4,000 cheaper than a Tesla Model 3. In addition, the EV6 is also a lot bigger than the latter: with its length of 4.68 meters and wheelbase of 2.9 meters, it is more likely to enter the fairway of higher-end EVs such as the Jaguar I-Pace. The EV6 is available with multiple powertrains. In this section we take the entry-level model as a starting point: it has a battery pack with a capacity of 58 kWh, rear-wheel drive and 169 hp. This allows the EV6 to accelerate to 100 km / h in 8.5 seconds and top at 185 km / h. The range is approximately 400 kilometers.

Furthermore, the entry-level version of the EV6 can fast charge with a charging capacity of 350 kW as standard. In that case, the battery pack can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in 18 minutes. If the battery capacity of 58 kWh is not sufficient, there are also three versions with a battery of 77.4 kWh on the price list: with rear-wheel drive (229 hp), four-wheel drive (325 hp) and as the aforementioned top version GT. With the exception of the GT, the other two versions are only available in the trim levels EV6 Plus and GT line. That pushes up the price, because the gap between the entry-level version and the EV6 Plus with 77 kWh and rear-wheel drive is € 7,500. The full price list can be seen here.

Today is red

Kia dares and chooses as the basic color for the EV6 no standard gray or white, but the striking ‘Runway Red’. The idiosyncratic design of the EV stands out even more in this way. If that is not your thing, then you have to pull the wallet, because the other nine available colors all have an additional cost of € 795. The EV6 rolls on 19-inch alloy wheels. Prefer a size bigger? Then you have to be at least with the four-wheel drive GT-Line. The underside of the bumpers and the rim of the fenders are black on the EV6. The exterior mirrors are also painted in the same color as standard.

Those exterior mirrors are also electrically foldable and heated. Furthermore, the EV6 always has privacy glass, LED headlights and rear lights, a light and rain sensor and parking sensors all around on board. A reversing camera is also available on the entry-level vehicle to make it easier to park the nearly 5-meter-long EV6. When you park at a charging station, you can charge the EV6 with the supplied type 2 charging cable of 5 meters long. You also have the option to charge the EV6 via the wall socket with the supplied home charger. The EV6 locks automatically thanks to the Smart Key.

Large displays

The configurator does not show the interior of the entry-level version of the EV6 very well, so we have taken the pictures of the interior of the EV6 Plus. In the basic version, the seats are upholstered in a combination of black fabric and ‘vegan’ leather, but apart from that, the differences between the versions are not very big at first glance. For example, the two 12.3-inch screens on the dashboard are always present, including the integrated navigation system and preparation for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The driver can select the desired driving mode via Drive Mode Select. The EV6 also has climate control with two zones as standard. Good news for people who often have to deal with an empty phone: every occupant has their own USB connection.

The front seats and steering wheel can be heated at no extra cost to keep it comfortable in the interior, even in colder weather. In addition, the EV6, like many other EVs, can be preheated with the remote control. Battery heating is also standard available to keep the battery at the right temperature. A heat pump is an option for € 995 on the basic version of the EV6. When it comes to safety systems, you will certainly not be short of anything: high beam assistance, blind spot assistance, adaptive cruise control, active lane assistance and traffic sign recognition are all included. The EV6 also warns against crossing traffic when you reverse and has an autonomous emergency brake assistant.

Apart from the aforementioned metallic paint and heat pump, there are no separate options available for the EV6. The EV6 Plus adds to the standard equipment, among other things, ‘Vehicle-2-load’, a function that allows the EV6 to charge another car, for example. It also includes seat ventilation at the front with electrically adjustable front seats, rear seat heating, a Meridian sound system with 14 speakers and an electric tailgate. The heat pump is also standard on the EV6 Plus. The GT Line adds things like GT Line bumpers, a glass sliding / tilting roof, aluminum pedals, Matrix LED headlights, a head-up display and highway assistance. In addition, the GT has GT bumpers, an electronically adjustable suspension and an electronic limited slip differential, but it has to do without the seat ventilation.
