The 24-year-old Max Verstappen has managed to open a successful attack on Lewis Hamilton in the final phase of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The race that initially seemed to lead to the eighth world title for Lewis Hamilton, turned into a victory for the Dutch driver.
Red Bull Racing pulled out all the stops strategically to help Verstappen to the world title and a magnificent defensive action by teammate Sergio ‘Checo’ Pérez also contributed. However, it was the crash of Nicholas Latifi resulting in a Safety Car that made it possible for Verstappen to chase the world title just behind Hamilton for one more lap. Successfully. 24-year-old Max Verstappen is the first Dutch driver to become world champion in Formula 1.
Verstappen and Hamilton started the final race in Abu Dhabi with exactly the same number of points. Max Verstappen sits on the F1 throne that Hamilton has sat on for four consecutive years. The first race of the 73rd Formula 1 season will be held in the weekend of March 18-20. Max Verstappen is not the youngest world champion in Formula 1. Sebastian Vettel as well as Lewis Hamilton and Alonso were younger when they first became world champions. Verstappen is the youngest driver ever to start an F1 race (17 years) and he is also the youngest GP winner ever.
