Will the maximum speed on Dutch highways return to 130 km/h during the day? We don’t dare say that yet, but the four forming parties would seriously consider it. Sources report this to the AD.

In March 2020, the maximum speed on Dutch highways was reduced from 130 km/h to 100 km/h. At least, during the day. It is the maximum speed between 6:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Outside of that, maximum speeds of 100 km/h, 120 km/h or 130 km/h apply, depending on the stretch of road. The reduction in the maximum speed was a measure by the Rutte III cabinet to reduce nitrogen emissions. What now appears? The four forming parties are seriously investigating whether the maximum speed can be increased again during the day. The AD reports this based on unspecified sources.

Two and a half weeks ago, PVV, VVD, NSC and BBB reportedly asked official questions to the ministries of Infrastructure and Water Management (I&W) and Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV). The forming parties want to gain insight into what the consequences of increasing the maximum speed would be.

Shortly after lowering the speed limit in 2020, a study by The Green Amsterdammer and Fidelity that the effects of the measure would be nil. The previous government later concluded that the effects were disappointing. This year, a study by the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, RIVM and Wageningen University also does not paint a rosy picture of the measure.
