Preview of the new one?
Later this month, the Japan Mobility Show will open its gates in Tokyo and Mazda certainly does not intend to let this major car fair pass by unnoticed. It focuses mainly on the MX-5 and even takes a study model related to that open two-seater with it. Is Mazda looking ahead to the next MX-5?
According to Mazda, its booth at the Japan Mobility Show will be all about the MX-5 and “the future created by the love of cars.” In any case, that somewhat woolly description seems to indicate that there is also room in Mazda’s future for models like the MX-5. Mazda is taking a whole bunch of MX-5s to the Japanese fair. From a first-generation example to the recently updated current MX-5 and this MX-5 SeDV that is intended for the disabled: you will probably stumble over the MX-5s. But there’s more!
Mazda is also bringing a new study model to the fair. According to Mazda, that car symbolizes the theme of its stand and that seems to indicate that the concept car fits in with the MX-5 theme. The brand already presents us with a shadowy teaser image, on which we see the rear of the study model. Judging by the design and placement of the lighting, we are dealing with a show car that may be strongly related to the Vision Study concept car that Mazda showed last year (photos 3 and 4). Since the brand speaks of a new study model, it is probably a variant of it. The Vision Study was a coupe, so it could be that Mazda will bring an open version of it to the Japan Mobility Show, giving a more concrete look ahead to the next generation of the MX-5. However, we do not expect to see the new Mazda MX-5 at the end of 2025.
