Mercedes-Maybach comes with S-class with V12

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Maybach’s first car on the market. The luxury brand, which today is known as Mercedes-Maybach, is therefore this year with ‘several initiatives’ to celebrate this milestone. One of these is the arrival of an S-class with V12, an electric Mercedes-Maybach is also planned.

The new Mercedes-Maybach S-class was already unveiled at the end of last year. At that time, however, it was not yet clear about the exact engine range of the top limousine. It was known that engines with electric (mild-hybrid) support would come, but whether the V12 would return was still uncertain. Until now, because Mercedes-Maybach shows an S-class with a V12 badge on the side on an image in honor of the 100th anniversary of the first Maybach. Incidentally, no mention is made of this variant in the accompanying letter, so further details are not yet known. It is obvious that the well-known 6.0 V12 with 630 hp from the previous Mercedes-Maybach S 650 has found its way into the latest model. It is not yet clear whether this range topper will also be on the price list in the Netherlands.

Mercedes-Maybach currently has two models in its offer: the S-class and the GLS. The bar is set high for the coming years, because they want to double the current sales figures of the super luxury label. Mercedes-Maybach indicates that it will come up with ‘multiple initiatives’ this year. This includes not only the V12 for the S-class, but also an electric Mercedes-Maybach. The Germans will announce more about that model in the coming months. Logically, this is the Mercedes-Maybach EQS, plans of which Daimler CEO Ola Källenius previously hinted.

Milestone

Maybach, which was founded in 1909, has a long history. The company initially built engines for Zeppelins, among others. In September 1921, Karl Maybach and his father Wilhelm presented to the public the W3, Maybach’s first production car. A total of 1,800 Maybachs were built before the war. During the Second World War, Maybach became a motorcycle supplier to the German army. Daimler took over the company in 1961 and finally introduced two new models in 2002 under the name Maybach: the 57 and the 62. Sales were disappointing, however, and in December 2012 the plug was pulled. Maybach returned at the end of 2014, but now as a sub-label of Mercedes-Benz.
