Michel’s Favorite iOS App of 2020: Amazing Marvin

2020 is almost over, but not before the editors of iPhoned look back one last time. Michel kicks off with his best iOS app of 2020.

Best iOS App of 2020: Amazing Marvin

My favorite iOS app wasn’t made in 2020, but I discovered it this year. Don’t be distracted by the slightly crazy name, Amazing Marvin is a fantastic calendar app, although you can do a lot more with it. At the same time, the app is also the home base for to-do lists, notes and project management.

Amazing Marvin especially excels in adaptability. When setting up the app, which is also available on Android and as a desktop version, you can indicate yourself how you bring order to your life. The basis of Amazing Marvin is bare and it is up to you to add useful planning methods, or ‘Strategies’ to it.

You can go in all directions with the productivity tooll. For example, do you like to work with a weekly planner, or do you always look a month ahead? Choose. And do you like being able to divide projects into small tasks and attach an end date (including minutes) to each task? Which can. Do you also want to add colors per sub-area? You ask, Amazing Marvin is spinning.

Customize everything

The app is almost completely customizable. That also applies to the appearance. In the Amazing Marvin theme store you will find various designs, so that the app copies the design of competitors, such as Todoist or Wunderlist, in one go. You can then use this basic design to shape your ideal agenda.

Last year I fell in love with the extensive possibilities of the app because it helps me to create an overview. The app serves as a reminder, project management tool for various employers and a shopping list. Moreover, it is ideal that you can switch all expansion options on and off: you are not tied to the design choices of the makers.

This is also directly the danger of Amazing Marvin. The app is far too extensive for people who simply look for an online agenda. In fact, seeing all those options and possibilities for the first time can be overwhelming. Fortunately, you soon learn that Amazing Marvin always puts the choice in your hands. You can make the app as comprehensive as you can imagine, but you don’t have to.

Cons of Amazing Marvin

Amazing Marvin is not perfect. For example, the iOS app (and Android variant) is a bit slow at times. The makers themselves also recognize this: the app is maintained by a small team and for the time being there is no capacity to expand the functions. If you run into problems, however, customer service is there like the chickens, as I know from personal experience.

Another downside of Amazing Marvin is the price. A monthly subscription costs more than 11 euros. If you pay a year in advance, converted (from dollars) you will lose about 7.50 euros per month and students receive a 50 percent discount. All in all, the app is not cheap, but as far as I am concerned, its money is well worth it.
