Microsoft Office is coming to the Mac App Store, and why it’s important

Microsoft Office apps are finally available for download from the Mac App Store. Although Office programs have been available to Mac users for some time, this offers a lot of benefits.

Microsoft Office in the Mac App Store

Microsoft Office has long been a household name for many when it comes to computer programs. As of today, all Microsoft Office apps are also available for download from the Mac App Store.

For years, you have been able to download programs like Word, PowerPoint, and Excel from Microsoft itself, but it’s a bigger step forward for people who want Office on their Mac. These are the main three reasons.

1. Easier updates

As useful as updates through the Mac App Store, updates to the Microsoft programs on your Mac are tricky. A big advantage is that downloading Office from the Mac App Store is equivalent to automatic updates in the background. This way, your apps will always be up-to-date without any hassle, and will be updated to the latest version along with your other app updates.

2. Office programs are bundled

If you regularly use different Office apps, it can be useful to adjust the apps you use accordingly. For example, use OneDrive instead of iCloud to store your documents and e-mails, and thus also set Outlook as a mail app.

Ideally, you can now download all Office programs as a bundle. This way you have all the apps on your Mac at the touch of a button. Do you only need a few? Then you can still download and select them separately.

3. Pay for the Office 365 license via your Apple ID

You need an Office 365 license to use most Microsoft Office apps. Although the apps are free to download, using them is not free.

For an Office 365 license you pay 69 euros per year, or 7 euros per month. Family sharing is also possible, in which case you pay 99 euros per year or 10 euros per month. Then you can use the apps with a maximum of six people.

In return, you can use Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook on your Mac, and you also get access to OneDrive with 1TB of cloud storage and Skype. You also get regular updates of all apps via the Mac App Store.

Where you previously had to conclude a separate agreement with Microsoft for the payment, you now simply pay via Apple ID. This way, purchasing the license takes even less effort and you no longer have to enter payment details and permissions when installing Office apps.

Dark Mode in Office apps

It has also recently become known that all Microsoft apps support Dark Mode in macOS Mojave. That way, you don’t have to stare into a bright white light when you’re trying to make a PowerPoint presentation or Word document at night.
